‘World’s Best Spas’ The Beautiful Publishing Company
Uma Paro is located on a 38-acre site close to the town of Paro, one of the main cultural centres of Bhutan. This unspoilt remote Buddhist kingdom nestles in the forested slopes of the Himalayas between India and Tibet, commanding staggering vistas of pine-clad valleys, terraced hills and snow-tipped mountains.
This very comfortable hotel, surrounded by pines, has 20 rooms and nine villas where the combination of clean-lined modernism with local styling includes carved wooden windows and intricate doors. There is a juice bar, a lounge, a library with Internet access and a restaurant serving wholesome fusion cuisine with Bhutanese-Indian influences.
At COMO Shambhala Retreat, you are able to rediscover inner quietude and the softer rhythms of nature. The retreat represents the property’s holistic heart, a place to better physical and mental equilibrium by way of sophisticated, bespoke treatments, including massage and Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is the ancient Indian tradition of healing drawn from the 3,000-year-old Vedic culture. It aims to restore the body to its natural state of equilibrium by rectifying imbalances in the three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha – that make up the bodily constitution.
Yoga represents a core element of the COMO Shambhala ideal; the retreat provides top-of-the-range facilities, including a yoga studio overlooking the serene
Paro Valley. Views are unbeatable and include pine forest, villages, fields and rivers set into a mountainous enclave. And yoga mats are supplied in-room.
During certain weeks of the year, the centre will host international yoga teachers. They lead dedicated retreat weeks in the same mould as the world-famous COMO Shambhala Retreat at Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos.
Other facilities include four treatment rooms, separate male and female steam rooms, a hot stone bath house and a 46-square-metre indoor pool with outdoor sundeck. There is also a gym. In addition, all Uma Paro menus feature the energising and highly nutritious options developed by COMO Shambhala cuisine
Treatments are based on holistic Asian traditions, including Ayurveda from neighbouring India. In Bhutan, COMO Shambhala also makes extensive use of natural ingredients and age-old remedies, working with the country’s revered hospital of Traditional Medicine. This is an area that will continue to develop, season by season. Where appropriate, COMO Shambhala adjusts this heritage to combine the best elements with key Western advances and treatments.
