Stress has a significant negative effect on men’s health so it is time to take a break.
There are many factors that contribute to stress, but the continual, enduring issues are work and home life. Stress is now a sweeping epidemic that can affect anyone in one way or another. It develops when people find that they can no longer cope with the pressures placed upon them and become overwhelmed. Symptoms can include fatigue, mood swings and skin problems.
Historically, men have had the main responsibility for household income, often working long hours. Socially accepted stress relief for men has in the past been having a few drinks with the lads but men are becoming increasingly interested in improving their image, as well as appreciating the benefits of treatments and some ‘me’ time.
‘The most requested services are our Luxury Wet Shave, and treatments that pamper and de-stress such as massage,’ says Sarah Payne, General Manager of The Refinery at Harrods. ‘Many of our male clients are introduced to treatments via gift vouchers from friends and colleagues and immediately understand the health benefits of ‘chilling’.
Taking time out from pressured environments is the start to relieving stress. Regular massages and treatments ensure that the body does not hold onto stress, helping to clear the mind.
A great un-winder is the Indian Head Massage. As so much stress accumulates in the neck, shoulders and scalp, this massage helps loosen the muscles and even relieve headaches and eyestrain - both classic symptoms of stress.
It is evident that many of today’s diseases are worsened by stress, if not caused by it. Dealing with stress comes down to acknowledging the symptoms and making changes in your lifestyle to combat the causes. Take time out to treat yourself to a relaxing treatment where you will be looked after and taken away from the ‘rat race’. Don’t stress, retreat.
