Pre-Shave
One of the most important factors with shaving is to cleanse and exfoliate prior to shaving to thoroughly remove any dirt and debris. The exfoliation will gently remove dead skin cells releasing ingrown hairs and giving a closer shave. Use The Refinery Face wash (£16) and Refinery Face Scrub (£18) to achieve best results.
Shave The most common mistake people make is to rush the shaving process. It doesn’t need to be a time consuming procedure but it is important to use the correct products and the correct process to achieve the best results. Always shave with the hair growth to reduce irritation and sensitivity and stretch the skin where needed. The best time to shave is in the evening when your skin is more hydrated. Shaving in the morning when your skin has had a whole night of no water and possibly central heating drying it out, will cause much more sensitivity and irritation. Also make sure that you use a new blade every time so that there is no drag on the hair and skin. Hot towels are a huge help in softening the hair to allow the blade to pass through with ease. Be sure to use a product to condition the skin as well as serve its purpose such as The Refinery Shave Foam gel (£12) and The Refinery Shave Oil (£21) which will penetrate the hair and soften it to allow an easier shave. By treating the skin as you shave irritation will be reduced and a smoother shave will be achieved.
Post Shave
During the process of shaving the upper layer of skin cells is removed leaving the skin more sensitive that usual so it is important to repair and protect the skin. Avoid using anything alcohol based as this will just add further to sensitivity and dryness. Instead, use a soothing balm such as The Refinery Post Shave Balm (£28) which contains witch hazel, a natural astringent to close the pores and soothing Aloe and Bisabolol to calm, soothe and protect the skin.

The wet shave commences with aromatic hot towels to soften and prep the skin followed by a face scrub and mask to remove dead skin cells and lift ingrown hairs. A deeply relaxing pressure point massage is performed using the shave oil to soften the hair. A bristle brush is then used with the shave foam to lift the stubble for the closest possible shave.
