Skin Essentials: Base

There are 3 factors you need to consider when choosing base: coverage, shade and protection.

Coverage:

Light:

As a general rule, the younger you are the sheerer the base can be unless you need extra coverage for blemishes or uneven skin tone. If you already have good skin and are simply looking for a naturally polished finish, a sheer liquid base gives dewiness and a fresh glow.

Medium:

As you get older your skin may appear uneven so you need a base with more coverage. Thankfully this no longer means plastering your face with makeup as light reflecting pigments and temporary fillers mean you can have younger looking skin without looking as though you’re wearing a mask.

To even out flaws and blemishes, look for a base that perfects, covers and leaves a velvety smooth finish.

Star Tip:

Where possible, allow your natural skin to show through. Use base to enhance and even-out your skin tone, then a concealer just to cover imperfections.

Shade:

When choosing your Base, find three shades that are similar to your skin tone and apply each as a little stripe along your jaw line. It’s important to see the base in natural light, so go outside and check for the one that disappears into your skin.

Base should be a veil of invisible perfection over your skin, not a mask so choose the most invisible of the shades and never ever go darker than your skin tone.

Protection:

Dry skin needs a base with nourishing skincare qualities, while oily skin should always be allowed to breathe with a tinted moisturizer or oil-free formula. Base with built-in sunscreen is essential unless your moisturizer has SPF.

Tip:

Look for pump bottles as they keep air and bacteria out, lengthening the longevity of your base
