Beat the Winter Blues

by Kathy Phillips

  1. It’s Friday night, you’ve got a party to go to and your energy levels are flagging after a long week, sound familiar? Take a bath in This Works “Energy Bank” Bath Oil before you go out. Packed with essential oils of geranium to boost your energy levels, Ylang Ylang to lift the spirits and Sandalwood to ground you, your winter blues will soak blissfully away.
  2. Nothing makes you feel better than 12-15 minutes of really strenuous exercise. First and foremost it gets the heart rate up which is great for your metabolism, and the burst of exercise helps to oxygenate the body and gives the face a healthy glow. Try Jumping jacks, running on the spot, running with the dog, a good gallop on horseback, twenty lengths of the pool, an hour’s ice skating or rollerblading or (my personal favourite) 12 cycles of the ‘salute to the sun’ yoga sequence breathing evenly and without pause.
  3. Christopher Hansard -physician of Tibetan Dur Bon medicine at The Eden Medical Centre -gave me this pick-me-up tonic which I love. Add 3 teaspoons of Angostura bitters to tonic water until the tonic goes dark red. This magic potion lifts blood sugars when they have dropped due to stress or fatigue, helps to relieve headaches and improves immune function. It also helps reduce the effects of jet lag if taken one hour before departure and ASAP on arrival.
  4. At the very first signs of getting a cold sip hot Elderflower syrup.
  5. Sometimes you have to fake feeling good, and there’s nothing like a sweep of blush to add a healthy glow to even the most pallid of winter complexions. Try Daniel Sandler Watercolours Liquid Blush in Truth, its waterproof and won’t budge when you get caught out without an umbrella.
