Dramatically improving the way we look is now more possible than ever and miracle therapies, services and treatments seem to hit the headlines every week. But trying to understand them can quickly become as complicated as taking an advanced biochemistry exam.
To choose the right treatment, it’s vital to use a reputable establishment and to understand exactly what’s involved. Operating under the medical supervision of Renew Medica, the Medispa at Urban Retreat offers a wide choice of beauty procedures that emphasise safety and results. But first you need to understand the jargon.
Jargon Explained
Botox
A chemical that’s injected into the facial muscles that create wrinkles in the skin. Botox blocks nerve impulses so the muscle relaxes, causing lines to become much less visible and prevent them from deepening.
Filler
A natural substance injected into the skin to fill lines and creases and enhance the shape of the lips and cheeks. See also hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid
The most common injectable filler, lasting between eight and 12 months.
Initial consultation
Recommended before all Medispa services, this gives you a chance to discuss your needs with a professional. The fee for the initial consultation (£50) is redeemable against your first service.
IPL
Intense Pulsed Light. A laser treatment used for a variety of cosmetic procedures. See also IPL treatment and Photo-rejuvenation.
IPL treatment
Short, safe bursts of light are filtered into specific wavelengths to eliminate unwanted hair, thread veins, age spots or uneven pigmentation.
Microdermabrasion
Propels a fine stream of crystals onto the skin to gently remove dead skin cells layer by layer. Used to treat fine lines, sun damage, congested skin, age spots, stretch marks and scar tissue. The results are visible and immediate.
Milia
Blemishes composed of plugs of keratin in the glands of the skin of the face that can be extracted by a Medispa specialist.
Photo-rejuvenation
High-intensity pulses of light, or IPL, penetrate the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin found in its deep layers, reducing fine lines, UV damage, hyperpigmentation and age spots.
Skin peel
Resurfacing treatment through which organic and chemical ingredients are applied to the skin to lift away its top layers, producing a smoother surface, closing pores and minimising hyperpigmentation, scars, fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage
