There’s nothing vein about scelerotherapy
Those afflicted with abnormal, unsightly veins on their legs need no longer suffer in stockings this summer. Scelerotherapy offers a 70-90% improvement after just one relatively painless 30 minute session. First performed in the 1930s and recently re-instated at the Urban Retreat at Harrods Medispa; a few injections of scelerosing solution, special stockings worn for two weeks and around £200 is all that separates you from skirt-worthy legs.
What is Scelerotherapy?
Scelerotherapy is a treatment by which abnormal veins are treated. The results are excellent and the procedure is extremely successful with minimal side effects. The veins are injected with a solution called Scelerosing solution with a very fine needle directly into the blood vessel. This procedure has been used since the 1930s to treat unsightly veins. Most patients can expect a 70-90% improvement in the treated vessels. The fading process is gradual and can take up to a couple of months for the larger veins to fade.
How does it Work?
The scelerosing solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together. After some time, the blood vessel fades becoming barely visible before disappearing completely.
How long is the procedure?
Each treatment session lasts for 30 minutes. The number of sessions required will depend on the size and condition of the veins. This will be discussed on consultation.
Is it painful?
These injections are relatively painless because they are done with a very fine needle. The solution can sting for a few minutes after it has been injected.
What needs to be done after the treatment?
There are two very important instructions to be followed after each treatment session. Firstly, you will be required to wear a special compression stocking to help keep the veins collapsed and avoid any side effects. The stockings will be worn for a duration of 2 weeks after the treatment. Secondly, you will be required to walk twice a day for a minimum of 30 minutes each time, again for two weeks. This works the calf muscles and reduces the pressure in the superficial veins which in turn reduces the chance of any side effects. Standing for long periods of time should be avoided for 2 weeks following treatment. Avoid any strenuous impact exercise but walking is important and cycling can also be done.
How much does it cost?
The number of treatment sessions required will be discussed individually on consultation. Each 30 minute treatment session will cost £200. Once the initial treatments are done, you might need a touch up session once every year or once every couple of years.
What are the Side Effects?
Even when a treatment is performed by a highly experienced practitioner, there are a number of possible side effects that may occur these will be discussed with you at your consultation.
To prevent getting new veins and for maintenance of good looking legs, the use of compression support stockings is recommended especially in people who stand for long periods of time. Maintaining a normal weight and regular exercise mainly walking may also be helpful
